                                                        HOLOCAUST UNIT 

Grade 8 ELA Regular and Advanced - Week of 4/16


FOCUS:  This week, we will be analyzing the development of theme, comparing text structure, and analyzing poetry.  We will read "The Whistle" and numerous poems.  We will also continue reading and discussing Night.

IREADY (Monthly Project Grade due on the last day of the month)
REGULAR ELA: 8 LESSONS COMPLETED AND PASSED BY 4/30.
ADVANCED ELA: 10 LESSONS COMPLETED AND PASSED BY 4/30. 
STUDENTS SHOULD COMPLETE NO 
MORE THAN 2-3 LESSONS PER WEEK. 

THEY WILL ALSO BE WORKING ON IREADY IN THE COMPUTER LAB EACH WEEK.

Wordly Wise Vocabulary - Lesson 8 Words
poignant (adj): profoundly moving or touching     
nostalgia (n): bittersweet longing for things from the past    
stoicism(n): indifference to pleasure or pain; a lack of visible emotion
ostensible (adj): something that is apparent or supposed
retribution (n): something given in repayment usually as punishment           
bravado (n): a false show of bravery
amorphous (adj): without a clearly defined shape or form          
perverse (adj): something that is stubbornly contrary, wrong, or harmful
clad (v): clothed                 
impotent (adj): someone who is lacking in strength, vigor, or ability to do something
exuberance (n): a condition of unrestrained joy         
degradation (n): the condition of being brought to a lower level or humiliated
squalor (n): a filthy, shabby, and wretched condition, as from poverty
DOMAIN VOCABULARY
nonfiction - writing that tells about real people, places, and events and is written mainly to convey factual information.
memoir - a form of autobiographical writing in which a writer shares his or her personal experiences and observations of significant events and people.
indirect characterization-  is when the narrator shows the reader something about the character through the character's actions, things the character says, or things other characters say.
direct characterization- when the narrator specifically tells us what a character is like
character trait - personality or physical qualities displayed by a character which exist, develop, and/or change over time
theme - a message about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader through a story
symbol - a person, place, an object, an animal, or an activity that stands for something beyond itself.  For example, a white dove represents peace.
metaphor - a comparison of two things that are basically unlike but have some qualities in common.
simile- a comparison between two unlike things using the words "like" or "as".
